This building, formally the Talbot Inn, was built in about 1830. It replaced the original coaching inn of the town, The Talbot’s Head, which was situated opposite and destroyed by fire.
By 1835, coaches were travelling three times a week from here to Cheltenham, leaving at 5.30 in the morning. On the same days omnibuses left for Cardigan, and on other days to Shrewsbury.
The part of the building now occupied by the lounge, together with the rooms above, was the original town post office. When the post office moved to its present location the Inn extended into the space.
The Talbot Inn once hosted fine balls and suppers and was one of the great meeting places of the town, and we hope that as The Orangery it will be again: and whilst we can neither stable your horses nor provide your manservant with quantities of porter ale, we can provide a charming and comfortable environment. Here you can eat the finest local food, and drink the best of wines and other refreshments.
